I Saw a Door Standing Open in Heaven
What the Bible Actually Says about Heaven and the God Who Lives There.
I used to picture heaven as an endless church service on clouds. Then I read the Bible’s own descriptions, and I’ve never recovered.
Heaven is not an escape pod from reality. It is the control room of reality—the place where God is fully unveiled, and everything finally makes sense.
Here is what Scripture actually shows us:
-
Heaven is the throne room of a Person, not a place floating in sentiment “Thus says the LORD: ‘Heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool…’” (Isaiah 66:1) “Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name…” (Matthew 6:9) Heaven exists because God is there. It is not the other way around.
-
Right now, heaven is full of ceaseless worship—and it is anything but boring Day and night the four living creatures never stop saying: “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” And the twenty-four elders fall down and cast their crowns, crying: “Worthy are You, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power…” (Revelation 4:8-11) The sound is like thunder, like many waters, like a multitude no one can number (Revelation 19:1-6). Worship in heaven is not dutiful. It is irresistible.
-
God’s appearance is overwhelming, not cuddly John saw Him: “One seated on the throne… appearance like jasper and carnelian… a rainbow that shone like an emerald… flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder…” (Revelation 4:2-5) Ezekiel fell on his face when he saw “a likeness with a human appearance… brightness all around… like the appearance of the glory of the LORD” (Ezekiel 1:26-28). Even the highest angels cover their faces and feet, crying “Holy, holy, holy” (Isaiah 6:2-3). Heaven is not safe. It is good.
-
Yet the Lamb is at the center In the middle of the throne stands “a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain” (Revelation 5:6). The scars are still there. And every creature in heaven falls down before Him singing, “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain…” (Revelation 5:12). The cross is not a regrettable episode we leave behind. It is the eternal reason we are allowed inside.
-
Heaven is coming to earth “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be His people… He will wipe away every tear… no more death or mourning or crying or pain…” (Revelation 21:3-4) The final chapter is not us floating away. It is the New Jerusalem descending like a bride, and God Himself moving the capital of the universe to a renewed earth (Revelation 21:2, 10).
-
We will see His face “They will see His face, and His name will be on their foreheads” (Revelation 22:4). Moses was only allowed to see His back and lived (Exodus 33:23). One day we will look straight into the eyes that are like a flame of fire (Revelation 1:14) and we will not die—we will become fully alive.
- Until then, heaven is already breaking in Every time a sinner repents, there is joy in the presence of the angels (Luke 15:10). Every time we forgive, Thy kingdom comes a little closer. Every time we take communion, we “proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” Heaven is not only future. It is now, and not yet.
I don’t know exactly what it will feel like to stand in that unfiltered light. But I know this: the same God who once walked in the garden looking for Adam is the same God who sits on the throne right now, surrounded by thunder and rainbows and living creatures and redeemed sinners from every tribe, singing at the top of their lungs.
And one day soon He is coming to make His home with us forever.
Even so, come, Lord Jesus. The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” (Revelation 22:17, 20)
We’re ready to see Your face.
